Walk, jog or run a 'marathon' during the month of May and raise money for the Pink Ribbon Foundation to support those affected by breast cancer. During the lockdown period, we’re looking for individuals, couples and households to sign up and commit to covering the distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) between the 1st May and 31st 2020 for charity. Due to the restrictions in place, it isn’t feasible to run a marathon in one go and so we are asking people to complete the 26.2 miles in segments throughout the month of May. Your marathon can be achieved at you own pace across as many days as needed and, in the park, on the street or even in your own back garden! So long as you are staying safe and taking all the necessary precautions.
There is no sign-up fee and no pressure to set yourself a huge fundraising target. You can set up an online fundraising page (here) and ask friends and family to sponsor your efforts with an amount per mile or a total at the end of May, or you can make a personal donation yourself at the end of the month – it’s up to you! You could donate the amount that the average person spends a month on coffee (£100) or the amount that the average person in the UK spends on their monthly commute (£146). So, whilst the coffee shops are closed and only essential workers are travelling, put your trainers on and get moving to support those with breast cancer.
(Now more than ever, it’s important to take daily exercise outdoors to look after both your physical and mental health. It is possible to enjoy time outside, so long as you follow the UK government guidelines and keep a safe distance from others. It has been proven that a healthy diet and exercise can reduce the onset of breast cancer by up to a third, so not only are you supporting others affected by the disease, you are also limiting your own risk by staying active).
(FACT: if you want to calculate the steps needed to complete a marathon, should you wish to walk the distance, then the average male would take 55,374 steps to complete the distance and for a woman it would be 62,926 steps).
